Trail running kit: what you really need
Shoes, vest, mandatory kit: what makes sense for your first trail race and what can wait.
Trail running doesn't need much more than road running, but the right things make a big difference on roots, rocks and in the mountains. Each organiser decides what is mandatory, so read the race information carefully.
Shoes
Trail shoes have a coarser tread for grip on soft and wet ground and are often more robust. On well-maintained forest roads a normal running shoe is often enough. The more technical and wet the course, the more a proper trail shoe pays off. Break in new shoes before the race.
Drinking and carrying
- Short trails (up to about 15–20 km): What the aid stations offer is often enough, perhaps supplemented by a small bottle.
- Longer courses: A running vest with soft flasks or a hydration bladder carries water, food and mandatory kit without getting in the way.
Many organisers avoid disposable cups for environmental reasons. Then you need your own cup.
Typical mandatory kit
Especially for long trails, ultras and mountain races, organisers often require:
- Emergency blanket
- Mobile phone with the organiser's emergency number saved
- A minimum amount of water
- Wind or rain jacket, sometimes with specified requirements
- Head torch for races into dusk or night
- First-aid supplies, whistle, emergency food
There may be checks before the start or on the course. Missing mandatory kit can lead to disqualification.
Clothing
Technical clothing that doesn't chafe, and layers for changing weather. In the mountains the weather can change quickly. On long courses, a hat or buff, thin gloves and anti-chafe cream help.
Poles
On long climbs, many trail runners use folding poles. Not every organiser allows them. Check beforehand and practise using them in training.
Navigation
Most trail races are marked. A GPS track on your watch still helps, especially in fog or darkness. Check beforehand whether the organiser provides a track.
