Races and sports events: Essen

Essen is greener than its reputation: the Baldeneysee in the south of the city is a meeting point for runners, rowers and canoeists, and one of Germany's oldest marathons has been run around the lake since the 1960s. The Ruhr valley and its cycle route offer flat riding and running, while the slopes along the Ruhr add some climbing.
