RTF and CTF explained

Radtourenfahrten and Country-Tourenfahrten are the classic mass-participation rides of German cycling clubs. Here's how they work.

RTF and CTF are organised rides that cycling clubs host as part of the mass-participation programme (Breitensport) of the German Cycling Federation (Bund Deutscher Radfahrer, BDR). There is no timing and no ranking. The focus is on riding together, a signposted route and food along the way.

RTF – Radtourenfahrt (road touring ride)

The RTF is meant for road bikes and runs on roads. There are usually several route lengths to choose from, from short loops to long routes. Longer versions are often advertised as a Radmarathon (cycling marathon).

CTF – Country-Tourenfahrt (off-road touring ride)

The CTF is the off-road counterpart: it runs on forest and farm tracks and is ridden on a mountain bike or gravel bike. Many CTFs take place in autumn and winter. In Westphalia, for example, the rounds of the Westfalen Winter Bike Trophy (WWBT) form their own CTF series.

How an RTF or CTF works

  • Registration: Entering on the day is often possible. Some organisers offer advance registration. The club has the details.
  • Start window: Instead of a mass start, there is usually a time window in which you can set off.
  • Route: Routes are signposted. Many clubs also provide GPS tracks.
  • Controls and food: At the control points you get drinks and food, and your visit is often noted on a scoring card.
  • Traffic: Routes are not closed, and normal traffic rules apply.
  • Helmet: At BDR mass-participation events, a helmet is usually mandatory.

Who is it for?

RTFs and CTFs are a good way into organised cycling events. You can choose a route that suits your fitness and don't need a licence. Regular riders can collect points over the season. The rules are set by the BDR and the regional associations.

Finding dates

Most clubs publish the dates for the new season over the winter. You'll find upcoming RTFs and cycling marathons below this guide, and CTFs in the event search under mountain biking.
